  • In the 1980s I had a CBM 600 calculator, which was sold cheaply by a surplus electronics mail order company at the time, together with an A3 type wheel printer in an 8 "double floppy disk drive, with the huge memory size of 1MB per disk at the time. I had used it in the plastics technology laboratory at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, and also made it available to students for the preparation of their diploma theses. The advantage was that we had a correct word processor that was very cheap, with quite usable spelling correction serial interface as well as via the IEC-625 bus, and a clean printout via the type wheel printer, which used very cheap ribbon cassettes. I had a problem, however, to get 8 "floppy disks. The ones that I was able to clean in the house were hard-sectored and I needed the soft-sectored version. The formatting of these huge :-) large data carriers took over an hour by the way.

  • In 1989 my employer, a chain retailer, was using the tape-drives to load the operating system into our Checkout Cash/ Terminals! And imagine my surprise when, during a tour of our Data Processing Center, I found they were using ancient, 60's style, tape drive Computers! Huge, open reel tape spools! I already had a vastly better system on my desk at home!

  • I know I'm four years late to the show, but if you'll permit, a question. When mentioned that there would be 3 or 4 bad disks in a box at the end of their manufacturing, did you mean the formatting was bad or the disk itself was bad? I found that a quick format cleared up any initial issues.

But can we use a floppy disk and make a higher storage density? And if we can how? Do you have any idea? I mean if I have understood it correctly the Magnetic writing and reading head need to be modified.

  • 2020 and I'm still using a hard drive, though i do have 2 solid state drives my hard drive stores my backup data also Solid state is still a little more expensive. hard drives are not obsolete because Solid state though has no moving parts and is faster tends to have limited read and write cycles, I dunno if that limit can ever be reached by a normal user at this point but it is something to look at , though to mitigate this manufactureres put in what essentially is buffer storage... What does seem to be on it's way out and maybe is obsolete now (correct me here, if i'm wrong) is Cds and Cd drives at least for games, I can still use old Cd's I have a CD drive ,but I only see games via Digital downloads, which is kinda a bummer in more ways than one if you think about it.

  • In 1985 I first heard of hard disks. I thought they meant the 3 1/2" disks that were beginning to appear on 16-bit systems of the time instead of an internal storage system. Hard disk drives were still pretty uncommon in 1985 so it's little wonder I got confused. It literally took me until the 1990s to discover the 3 1/2" disks were also considered floppy even if the shell was firm unlike the 5 1/4" disk.

  • I once ordered 500 floppies, they cost a fortune but I manage to sell them off by the box to friends, they were eager to get them from me because I sold them at maybe half the price they usually cost and I got the 200 I kept for free. I felt like some kind of computer drug dealer back then. :)

  • @The 8-Bit Guy I grew up with a C64 and your videos really hit home for me. You mentioned that the quality of floppy disks degraded; they weren’t as reliable as the ones that were made in the 70s and 80s. In the late 80s and early 90s, I can remember coming across a handful of floppy disks that were bad right out of the box. Can you explain how they failed and why? Maybe even make a video too? Thanks! :)

  • In the 80s there was a very bright guy working at the local computer shop named David Poole. He wrote software and has his own forms of copy protection. He would physically damage the disk with a pin hole and each copy of the software was unique in that it looked specifically for the damage spot to verify it was an original copy. I recall a silly program he wrote called little black book. It was a small database to keep girls numbers in. I remember backing up the whopping 10 Meg hard drive on our original IBM pcxt in zip to multiple floppies. And it took a great number of of floppies. Running a pc booting with dos and inserting a separate disk for something like wordperfect or lotus 123 was really not that bad of an experience. I remember compressing music to low sampling rate mono to fit on a 5 1/4. It worked and could play the song on a 8 bit sound card well enough for the time. Cheers

  • Of the floppies I still have somewhere ... Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis is on 9x 3.5" discs ... Windows 3.1 is on 11 discs and Office 4.3 is 37 discs. I backed all my floppies up on CDs long ago when the floppies started to rot, which is problem they suffer from because the felt inside the casing collects moisture. Even up towards year 2000 when most programs came out on CD, many companies still had an option to order the program on floppy disc, which meant they'd send you this massive box full of dozens of floppies. Even in the early 2000s it was still not unusual to have computers without CD/DVD drives, especially in office environments, and in some cases installing programs from floppy was the only option, even if it took days and hundreds of floppies to get a computer set up.
