The world of football was rocked by the news of the new European Super League which would see the 'big 6' in the Premier League leave and start an elite league.
The ramifications of this would be huge, so The Kick Off are here to discuss what this means for English football.

  • The Super League could change football as we know it. Let us know your thoughts below.

    • It died in 1997, When you could qualify for the champions league when you finished 2nd and 3rd in your league. The competition should be what it says on the tin, the champions of their league. Only 1st place in the league should qualify. Not a watered down competition. The 2nd rate European competition should be a competition where only the domestic cup winners go through that way it's again a another competition with only champions and will make the domestic cups even more competitive. .

    • The super league will come off. The rich owners will simply Pivot their approach to achieve what they want. Ultimately it is profit for their stakeholders (not including the fans). It only required a PR statement to get useful feedback from the target audience-now they adjust and relaunch.

  • Coming back to this video a little late. I’m American and it’s very sad to see this happen to the beautiful game. The point you mentioned about college sports... in America there is a different pulse between pro sports vs college. College football and basketball for example is a sport that has been a lifestyle for people for decades and they eat sleep and breathe it. The atmospheres eat pro sports alive. And for many people, they only follow pro sports like the NBA/NFL/NHL to see how those former college players are doing. The money kills a lot of the attraction for a lot of people. It always appears that maybe the product of college sports are less “beautiful” to watch in terms of skill. But the fan bases play a huge factor. It makes the sports more genuine feeling.

  • This is why young people are often the heartbeat of change. Buvey at least wants to fight it while the other three (I know they're not old) are almost accepting of it immediately and even patronise him by calling him idealistic. Fans in England have been passive for too long. When stadiums are full the match is a focal point for the most powerful protests in the world. You get 50-60k people all in the same place with the potential to do anything from walk out, to stopping the game happening in the first place. Fans have asked for years; it's time to demand.

  • It sounds boring as hell to me. Does it not sound like a project, that would get stale very quickly? I love to see football, but what I love more, is to see a "small club" taking on(winning) over a "big club". I also want to see the big clubs face off, but if I saw it again & again & again etc. to me, it would get boring & stale very quickly. It sounds on the long-term a self-destructive project.

  • 1997: Police Investigations Find No Evidence of Wrongdoing Two waves of nationwide investigations were launched in China’s Ministry of Public Security (also known as the Police Ministry) in January and July 1997 to pursue so-called “illegal religious activities” related to Falun Gong. It was said that if such activities were confirmed, Falun Gong would be classified as a “cult.” After thorough investigations by the police system throughout China, however, no such evidence was identified. Nevertheless, the increasing popularity of Falun Gong agitated Jiang Zemin, the top CCP leader at the time.

  • Rory and Geordie are wrong about - well almost everything. Firstly - tell the very best players in the world you won't be able to play the Football World Cup anymore - seriously - and see how many footballers leave their clubs. Secondly - WE ARE THE ONES who determine the value of FOOTBALL - we the FANS - i'm not an English fan - but your assumption that international fans would want to watch Barca vs Man Utd or Real Madrid vs Man Utd every other week is laughable - only 12 year olds who've just started playing football on FIFA have that opinion. Football without rewards and consequences is not football - it's an exhibition match. why do you think the football world cup is the most watched event in all of civilization ? ( I WOULD NOT WATCH THE ESL ) . Thirdly - your attitudes are defeatist attitudes - we can rally - we can explain - and we can go forward. The American sports system are THE MOST BROKEN SYSTEM in the world. The throw away comment from Rory which said like college basketball - umm - have you heard of March Madness lad ? I don't think you're that into Basketball to be honest - the players in the "Franchise" system - except for the top 10% - all the others are screwed. Imagine after the ESL - there would be no more Bruno from sporting to Man Utd, no Cantona to Man Utd. TAKE A STAND.

The big six would be nothing without the 100 years building to it. And frankly I don't care to watch massive sides going out with more spent on a striker than the entire team. I rather watch the games my club are likely to compete in. Buvey at least understood the importance of what other clubs mean to their fans.

Or maybe like the South American leagues, they are quite good and even though the best players get bought, the quality of game stays up there. The plastic fans could watch the Super League and what not, but the real fans would know that the real deal is in the local league, and they can also tune into the "World Football Entertainment" or whatever it ends up being called.

Going against the super league was a united effort to save football and keep some merit in the game where you need to earn the right to play in the best competitions and going by this season you are going to see a couple of surprise entries into champions league next year which is the beauty of this league and why it needed to be saved from greed. Its not about Newcastle, Arsenal, Leeds etc. It's about football in general.

People reap the benefits of this system, but now when the money is going the wrong way everyone freak out. The Super League is the Socialistic system, at least among their own teams, formed by the need for Capitalism. Also Rip the Super League.

Football is a business now, not a game! And you fans have made it infinitely worse with your sheep-like paying of huge amounts of cash for season tickets, hospitality and all kinds of overpriced shirts, strips and other merchandise for your kids. You only have yourselves to blame! Think about it.
