"Nobody registers WinRAR." So let's register WinRAR! It's notorious for its infinite 40-day trial so I've been curious what activating it is actually like. I also wonder how old of a version of WinRAR can be activated using a 2021 registration key! Let's find out with Windows XP, 98, 95...

Unpack key file in WinRAR 2.9+ and put in in WinRAR dir directly.
I'm curious, how many people here use the free open-source option 7Zip instead of Winrar? 7zip is supposedly faster and slower in some things depending and I've also heard it covers more filetypes and is available on more operating systems.
can u do the pkzip/pkunzip in the win10?
What about bandicam!? No more watermarks for you!
Now go ahead and actually BUY PKZip 😄
This is one of the rarest event on earth.
I have ended up owning 3 copies of Winrar due to loosing computers and not being able to transfer licences. I didn't have time to always close the notification window when unzipping hundreds of folders every day
5:31 you just opened the winrar key file in “7zip” haha
WInRAR is better than 7z cuz COLOURS. -This post was made by WinRAR gang PS: I use 7zip
"i use 7-zip" wait, people dont use winRAR?
You might want to do a history episode on the ZIP archive format. It's a wonderful example of how winning a law suit can still result in the failure of your company because people simply don't like you and refuse to support your product.
LGR, dude. Google? What's wrong with you? Lycos, Altavista!
Forgive me Eugene, I once cracked WinRAR! But still got WinRAR on my system :) Unregistered and uncracked
I purhaced my winrar lisence 2009. Supporting this company is very good thing so I think this money went to right direction.
Now you have a granted place on Heaven.
"Chrome works but Safari doesn't' - nothing is closer to the truth
Thanks for rememboring . Registered now
There's a lot to unpack here. ... I'll see myself out.
It just hurts... you actually bought it for 40$? Damn...
Probably broke rarlab's consumer relations employee, by being the first ever consumer to purchase WinRAR.
This is a fun video. I was always curious why it was free forever,
*raises hand* I'm one of the few who registered it, back in 2004 or so! At the time I was like "ah sure, doesn't cost that much". 😂 I just checked the readme file that comes with the key and it says: "Please contact support 'at' rarlab 'dot' com if you need a key for an older WinRAR/RAR version then 2.60."
Back in the day I had a registered version of PKZIP for DOS !
WinRAR Team : Family, today we eat
Awww you should have found the exact cutoff version!
It's good that it works so far back!
oh my, this is legendary... xD
Buying WinRAR for a Mac LOL
To boldly go where no man has gone before
7zip ftw
Kliksphillip
Hey @LGR, have you considered covering Apple's PowerMac 5200? I can't be the only one out here with find memories of that thing.
I actually registered it about a gazillion years ago :) Wanted to give the programmers back for the great software I use day to day...
I bought WinZip back in the mid 90s, with the purchase printoff page proudly proclaiming that I had a LIFETIME registration code. And then, some short years later, the code stopped working, telling me it was invalid and I'd have to buy a new one. That was my first "Office Space Stapler Guy" moment. Too bad it wasn't the last. You, winzip folks, earned a gravity cancelling kick-in-the-nards for that one.
1:50 sick burn, bro.

I'm imagining that episode of The Simpsons where Lisa buys Al Gore's book and since its the first one sold the alert is sent to him.
Some grandson is waking up his grandpa .. don't wanna give you a heart attack but someone registered a copy of your program grandpa.
Can u do a vid to format pc to factory settings on xp
The meme gods have been kind to WinRAR
* laughs in 7Zip *
My copy still works lol
Rarlab and WinRar GMBH actually changed their business model. Their new product, mobile app RAR, is fully free, but it has a nag screen asking you for a voluntary 5$ monthly subscription to support development, kinda like a tip jar Patreon. And honestly, I think I will subscribe when I get a job, to support development of free software.
TUCOWS
What a lovely way to start my Sunday ! Heaps more entertaining that I would've thought. Cheers, LGR :D
What about Total Commander? 😀
I was always curious what you got if you bought it. I guess the mystery is solved. Can't wait to see that CD.
man, that was a long 40 days
Nah, I'm team 7zip. I've stopped WinRar ever since.
You buy a Winrar license? Straight to heaven!
To be honest, this video combined with the fact it's my goto compression program made me order my license+CD aswell. It's a small sum for the amount of usage I got out of it over the years.
$3000 winrar copy giveaway when?
Fun fact: even if you buy winRar, the kry can be copied to other systems. So you can get up to 3 licenses for price of one.
who needs WinRar when 7-zip is better and truly for free?
I went through a similar exercise with Total Commander and Beyond Compare on my Retro PC. Short answer: Total Commander's registration still totally works on the 16-bit version, and Beyond Compare registrations are version specific, but a quick e-mail to support will give you an older key if you want it (and already registered, naturally)
I still use WinRAR. Never really bothered with 7zip, and stopped using WinZip in the mid 2000's (when I switched to WinRAR.
I personally use a mix of WinRAR and 7Zip as WinRAR is better at opening archived applications, as it temporarily extracts the whole archive, unlike 7Zip, which only extracts the executable, which fails if it depends on any external files, which most executables do
MS Office XP / 2003 / 2007 are paid software which all people use it free
My friend in college bought it, he was a genuine good guy.
I use 7zip, works on everything, is open source and free
The problem back then was finding ANY reliable file to unzip, winzip just ended up pissing me off. I appreciate WinRar, I have thought about registering before, but I already knew it was meant for large company enterprises to make full use of. I only needed a mere 'kb' of info to unfold. All I can do, at least right now, is thank WinRar! Thanks WinRAR! Thanks for not being a greedy PoS, like MicroDick-err-Soft company!
Maybe I shouldn't give you any ideas. but next you should register a copy of Nero burring rom.
update I did a few years ago. no more infra recorder or imgburn.
I prefer 7zip
I'm curious, why would you want to have Win Rar any more. You got ICloud back up and ssd's are really cheap now.
Anyone putting anything on the cloud are as dumb as bitcoin investors, especially on iCloud or Amazon Cloud. In fact, fucking stupid. Your data is at their mercy. And hackers.
OMG! Games instaled on Windows XP :) Thanks for reminding me on same old days :)
you took a gigantic load off of me
man I love some nerdy shit
Tsk tsk tsk.. You did notice it said your license was for a single PC usage, but you just installed it on like 8 different PC's.. I think you owe Rarlab some more money! Maybe need a bulk license?
Just use 7zip lol
*me being a 7zip user for 10+ years*
I can't believe how interesting this was... ahh WinRAR, what a legacy. Stoked to see the CD!
Great video. The nag screen doesn't come up if you right click an archive and extract from there. You hadn't mentioned it yet when I typed this if it comes up later. My memory sucks these days so I have to type thoughts or chances are I forget before the end.
Lol, just after I watched the video another youtuber I watch wrote on Twitter that he had to register WinRAR for corporate use. What a coincidence.
This was educational and entertaining at the same time. And the memories... oh, the memories...
I remember pirating it just to skip that nagging screen but later just switched to 7zip
This is great and all, but it could use a sandwich
Imma be that guy who stans the sandwich channel
I wish Virtual ][ and Emulator Enhancer 2 for Mac PowerPC were so forgiving!
Soooooo.... going to switch to Rar now? Seeing that old maze screen Saver made me wonder if there ever was a doom mod for it. ????
iam using winrar till today
I should buy a license only because I used it to mod Minecraft, I dont f with minecraft anymore but anyway.
In 2014 I built my first proper gaming PC. I pirated WinRAR. I then had to spend a couple hours removing hundreds of viruses off my freshly installed copy of 8.1 using Avast's boot scanner. I use 7-zip now and whilst it can be rather annoying sometimes, I prefer it.
You use 7zip to open WinRar LOL!
What we learned is when you buy a WinRAR licence, its yours for life.
I dont think I ever noticed that it wasnt free. I never cared to read the message window when I used it.
TIL after 20ish years : THERE ARE THEMES FOR WinRAR!?
Why do people thinks it’s so weird to register WinRAR I registered after the trail and I new you could have it free but the pop up really bothered me.
Try look in to the key-file itself to see if user and password are inside the file
Sigh, so many memories with that Win95 and that CD in the background that reminds me of an eagle eye every time.
@4:32 buys Winrar.. @7:20 abuses "single pc usage license" :)
Makes me think about WordPerfect. Companies bought the program and were allowed to give the employees a free copy to work at home, get used with it, and so on. Many people used WP as their default text editor and more companies bought it.
i like how he chose 4/20 as the date and around 4:20 for the times.
I like how he chose 4/20 as the date and around 4:20 for the times
What are you 12?
Stop Pirating software Clint! It's a single use license =p
29k likes... just like the pricex1000 LOL
You've breached the licensing terms! It's a "single PC" license! :-D
Look at the top comments. There is a discussion about this. As I understood, it is allowed to use the program with a single-user license for personal use on several PCs.
Ahh, didn’t we all for not registering?
I really miss those Windows intro tunes. 95's the best by far!
So question: Why do people still use this when there is 7zip?
Probably because it works fine for the majority of reasons most people would use it. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
I think I'm the only person I know who ever actually registered WinZIP. I don't think I ever registered WinRAR.
When you pronounce RAR in Russian it doesn’t sound like lion’s roar :)))
